Tattoos as an art form is almost as ancient as mankind itself. Several tattooed Egyptian
female figurines ated circa 4000-
In Ancient Egypt this art form was restricted to women only. It is unknown why these women were tattooed but common theories suggest that they either were marked because of their dubious status as a 'dancing girl' or her connection with religious practice and serving certain goddesses.
However, the cultural differences played their own role and the meaning and role of female tattoos varies depending on culture that practices tattooing. For example, in Borneo women got tattoos that indicated their skills as crafters. If a woman had a symbol saying that she was a skilled weaver, it was more likely she would get married sooner than her less skilled mates.
A lot of cultures used permanent body art also to indicate the marriage status of
a woman. Females were often getting tattoos on their wedding day. The art of tattoos
was also commonly used as a method of representing membership in a clan or society.
At the beginning of 20th century tattooing didn't have much credibility. Heavily
tattooed people usually were parts of circuses and freak shows. Needless to say,
female tattoos were considered to be a sign of the 'dubious nature' of their bearer.
One of the first famous tattooed women was Betty Brodbent who was a star of Ringling
Brothers Circus in the 1930s. She met a tattoo artist Jack Red Cloud and fell in
love with the art of tattooing. In spite of the negative cultural view of permanent
body art she decided to get a full 'tattoo suit'. The result was shocking for the
times but very impressive -
A lot of modern day female musicians, sport stars, actresses and even super models
have chosen to express themselves buy getting a tattoo. Although the female celebrity
tattoos can be seen on various parts of their body, women whose profession requires
them to show their bodies such as models and actresses usually chose to have a discreet
place for their tattoos such as ankles or a tramp stamp.
Even if the celebrity status doesn't require women to expose their bodies, there
are still some socially unacceptable tattoo locations such as face. Also very few
female celebrities are daring enough to wear a full tattoo body suit. Hats off to
Theo Kogan and Kat Von D for their courage.
When it comes to having your own tattoo, choosing the right location and the most
suited design for you is very important since you will be living with it for the
rest of your life. A lot of tattoo places have albums with various female tattoo
designs which can give you some inspiration.
You can also browse through tattoo websites to find the female tattoo design you would like the most. The most popular and loved choices are floral patterns, traditional Japanese or American tattoos, butterfly, fairy and angel motives.
Choose a tattoo that has a special meaning for you -
The Egyptians spread the art of tattooing throughout the world to Crete, Greece, Persia and further. By 2000 B.C. the art of tattooing had reached South East Asia and soon Japan.
The Silk Road played a significant role with spreading the tattoo art all over Asia.
